When the reliable, very portable Bodum hot water pot I had for 12 years needed to be replaced due to a compromised electrical cord, I researched the purchase replacement thoroughly before settling on the Toastess TGK486. I've now had the product for a month and am pleased.

I chose the Toastess because it has a glass carafe, which is not easily portable but eliminates the potential for plastic leaching into heated water. The glass is "German" and the Toastess is "Canadian", so I was hopeful that I'd eluded the dreaded "Made in China" consumer epidemic. Alas, I haven't.

That said, the product works great and turns itself off, which is a huge deal for me. I passed on lower-priced models that didn't offer that feature. My review title is "Cautious" simply because of the China aspect, and I gave it four stars because it's not a portable model. It seems to be solidly constructed, however. Judging by the month's use I've put it through already, I expect it to hold up well to my 2x-daily tea habit.

I have been on the hunt for a proper kettle......like the ones in England. They will never be quite as fast here in the States due to the lower current...but this one comes amazingly close. It looks like the water is mainly only touching glass. This is easy to use, attractive, and relatively fast. The other kettle I tried was a Krups...which worked as fast but had a detached lid which was a pain. My vote goes to the Toastess!!

As an aside....many people have complained of a "funny" smell or taste.....I did not find that with either kettle.

Also I have seen complaints of kettles not shutting themselves off. Be aware that the lid must be closed securely as it is the amount of condensation on the filter which trips it.

First off, I am not the pickiest person around, but I do read reviews before I make a purchase. This tea kettle had great reviews and I needed a tea kettle, be it electric or on the stove top and I was tired of tea kettles that rusted out or got tons of sediment built up with in them. we are serious about boiling water around here.
This tea kettle is completely glass, Except, obviously for the lid, which opens up and locks in the open position allowing refill of the kettle to become a stable operation; after all the kettle is glass.
The glass itself is very durable (tempered) and I'm a klutz, which is one reason I like the way the lid doesn't flop around. Just be sure to lock it in place when putting it back on the heater for heating, or else it won't stop boiling until all the water evaporates. (I've only done this once)
My favorite thing about this kettle is that you can see the mineral build up beginning, immediately I put a tiny amount of white vinegar in the pot and with in seconds the mineral deposits dissolve. I rinse it out with out any scrubbing and I have a clean and shiny glass tea kettle on my counter again, it's a thing of beauty to me.
The water heats up quick enough for me and I use this appliance at least 8 times a day, as I work from home. I've had it approx. 3 months now.
